Wellness Women We Love: Claire Baker – This is Lifeblood

Claire Baker 1

Claire and I are the classic tale of modern day love. You know… Girl Instagrams food, other girl Instagrams place, girls laugh at photo similarities, girls meet at cafe to Instagram together, girls fall in mad friendship-love. And they lived happily ever after making flower crowns and going on road trips all the way.

But seriously, for me, it was adore at first sight! Claire has the most amazing way of making you feel completely comfortable from the second you meet her. And this knack clearly translates to her writing and has surely been key to her blogs massive popularity! With the perfect balance of vulnerability and strength, she delves deep into her own ego and thus challenges you to examine your own. She is a champion for following your dreams, living authentically, travelling lots, eating amazing nourishing food (the girl can cook a curry!) and just to let life flow.

I am not sure what forces of the universe spun us into each others orbits but I am extremely grateful to them as my life is better for having her in it. I’m sure after getting to know her you will feel the same!

Meet Claire – the coolest dude around!

Thank you for walking onto this virtual stage! Now if you were walking onstage in real life what tune would you have playing as your theme song?

Ooohh I’m going to have to be corny and say The Beatles ‘All You Need is Love’ and I’m skipping on stage with daisies in my hair, the sun is shining and life is good. Love is all you need baby!

What motivated you to take the first step on your wellness journey?

Being diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis at 17 certainly threw me into the deep end of raw juices, whole foods and the wellness world. Seeing my body heal through natural, holistic therapies changed my life forever. I’m so grateful I had that experience of being so unwell as I value, appreciate and prioritise my health today on a whole new level.

What do you do every morning to set up your day for success?

If I’m honest with you, I don’t always meditate in the mornings. I don’t always exercise, drink warm lemon water or oil pull (although I do most days) but I ALWAYS create a mental gratitude list by thinking of 5 things I am grateful for every single morning before I get out of bed. Being grateful for what we do have shifts our perceptions, attracts more of the good stuff and ensures we don’t start the day with stinky negative thoughts.

There are so many nutritional untruths floating around out there. What is your favourite myth to debunk?

That milk is the best source of calcium. Noo!! Where do you think the cows get their calcium from? Greens people, greens!

How do you handle your dietary non-negotiables when you are invited over or out for dinner?

I’m pretty flexible to be honest. I admire people who won’t eat anything that isn’t organic or prepared in a certain way but unless my friends are serving deep fried mars bars smothered in cheese-in-a-can, I’ll pretty much eat anything. When I’m out for dinner, I stick to lean meats, seafoods, salads and veggies and pass on anything too gluten-y.

Claire Baker 2

If you had to cook one meal to impress a tough crowd of unhealthy eaters, what would it be?

It’d have to be a slow-cooked (organic, grass fed) lamb roast with warm spinach, pumpkin, beetroot and parsnip salad. Particuarly in the cooler weather right now! In Summer I’d probably whip up a coconut-crusted salmon fillet on a bed of mango, celery and cucumber salsa. I’d finish both meals off with this slice.

Do you have any natural products/alternative therapies that you cannot live without?

Apple cider vinegar for the win! Raw, organic, unpasteurized of course. This stuff does wonders for my digestive system, either diluted in warm water in the mornings or a cap or two before meals. You can also use it as a yummy salad dressing, a toner for your skin, hair rinse or even as deodorant.

How do you ‘zen-ify’ your home?

Candles, open windows, fresh air, natural light and crystals. And regular de-cluttering.

What is your favourite imperfection about yourself and why?

My sweet tooth! Because I freaking love making raw chocolate treats, chia puddings, bliss balls and slices like this one.

What is one question that everyone should ask themselves?

What do I LOVE to do?

What is the most important decision you make to ensure you are a conscious consumer?

It totally depends on what I am consuming. However, I really try to refrain from accumulating ‘stuff’ and I think it is ultra important to shop locally and avoid the big chain supermarkets as much as humanly possible.

Pretend this is your mountain… what message do you shout to the world?

Beautiful people, life is there to be enjoyed, not endured! So clear the crap, uncover your inner strengths, pursue your passions, do whatever the hell makes you happy, be weird, be grateful, love yourself and never stop giving back.

Wellness Women We Love: Donna McLaurin – MicrOrganics Green Nutritionals

_MG_6350

Donna is one of those people that as soon as you meet you want to cuddle!

After a little bit of online chatter beforehand I was lucky enough to meet her face to face and share a raw dinner at the David Wolfe tour  (read all about that here) which her wildly successful company MicrOrganics Green Nutritionals was sponsoring. Impossibly warm and kind Donna exudes so much enthusiasm for wellness that it is completely contagious. The fact that she still looked so damn cheery and bright-eyed after a massive National tour with Mr Avocado himself is testament to her health-built resilience. Donna is so passionate about her products and message – and so she should be. Her Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina was recently voted best Spirulina at the Nature & Health Natural Food Awards! And I am sure you have seen her other trademark floating round – the ubiquitous glass froggy straw!

It seems that as Donna’s company grows and grows and GROWS touring is all part and parcel of her busy life. You can catch her in Brisbane at the Utopia Women’s Wellness Event this weekend which features some former Wellness Women We Love Jessica Ainscough and Therese Kerr (among others). That will be followed by the Earth Events sponsored Raw Beauty Workshops with Vegie Head and Amanda Rootsey**. All this while managing three rather gorgeous “kids” (Mitchell 24, Thomas 22 and Jordana 20). Oh and did I mention she is studying at IIN as well?

**For all the WA peeps that are jealous of these amazing events, stay seated! Me and some gorgeous ladies are working on some fantastic events for Perth!

I am always totally inspired to see people who manage to stay centered, grounded and conscious (Donna is also a plastic hater!) with such jam-packed schedules. So today I am so proud to present to you the gorgeous and inspiring Donna McLaurin! Just a shame you cant cuddle her through the screen.

Thank you for walking onto this virtual stage! Now if you were walking onstage in real life what tune would you have playing as your theme song?

I think the theme song playing would be Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’ I don’t know why, I guess I grew up with this song and for some reason I sing it nearly everyday … The other song that came to mind is Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as it has so many highs and low, melodies and harmonies and ups and downs – Just like life itself!

What motivated you to take the first step on your wellness journey?

I was motivated as a very young girl to be healthy and eat health-giving foods, my Mum was a great cook and I don’t remember us ever having take-away even though Mum ran her own business back then, she was an amazing example to my sister and I.

At  21 I was seriously injured in a car accident – I was a front seat passenger in a head-on collision and my face was severely lacerated and I broke many teeth … this led to years of treatment and recovery and a focus on taking care of my health to avoid back pain and joint pain and to heal my damaged face. I do still have some glass fragments embedded in my eyes, so that might also explain the song above!

After the initial surgeries and many years of dental restoration, I tried lots of alternative therapies and became interested in natural health, nutrition and skin care – especially after marrying and having three babies within 4 years! I remember buying an old fashioned Mouli for mixing baby food back then, as we didn’t like the idea of buying the packaged stuff. Now our children are young adults and all are a great example of good health!

What do you do every morning to set up your day for success?

I have to admit, I’m not naturally a morning person and I’m still working on changing that!

My first wake-me-up is usually a lovely cup of tea that Mark brings me in bed (how spoilt is that) .. then I love to do some yoga stretches – we have a mat permanently set up in what is supposed to be our lounge room!… then it’s a healthy breakfast, usually a Green Smoothie  or a bowl of home-made muesli with berries or banana on top. Then straight into checking emails and attending to social media updates for the business. I’m lucky to be working from a home office these days, so during the breaks I can stretch my legs, put some washing on, make a yummy salad for lunch, get some sunshine and maybe even take the dog for a walk!

There are so many nutritional untruths floating around out there. What is your favourite myth to debunk?

My favourite nutritional myth to debunk is that all fats are unhealthy.

We now know that eating a low-fat diet is not the healthy way and there are so many good and essential fats that need to be included in our diets – Coconut oil, Olive oil, Avocados and the essential fatty acids found in Microalgae such as Spirulina and Chlorella should be included in our diets every day.

How do you handle your dietary non-negotiables when you are invited over or out for dinner?

I tend to be pretty easy-going when it comes to dietary rules, I live by the 80/20 rule and believe that if your diet is great at least 80% of the time, there is room

for movement when out and about. If it’s something I definitely don’t eat, (or drink) then I just leave it.

If you had to cook one meal to impress a tough crowd of unhealthy eaters, what would it be?

It would probably be a big batch of Kale chips for starters then include a large, colourful salad with Quinoa or chick-peas plus a beautiful roasted vegetable and onion flan or pie followed by an Avocado and raw Cacao chocolate mousse or a chia-seed pudding.

Do you have any natural products/alternative therapies that you cannot live without?

The natural product I would find hard to live without would have to be MicrOrganics Green Nutritionals Green Superfoods, we have it every day, whether in a big Green Smoothie, sprinkled on kale chips or just a handful of vege-caps on the run! We also have a wonderful Reflexologist that my Husband, Mark and I see occasionally to get rid of any aches and pains, he is amazing!

How do you ‘zen-ify’ your home?

We live in a old 1920’s timber home in a semi-rural area and right from day 1 (20 years ago) it seemed to have a great aura about it – there is so much greenery and lovely gardens around it including two very old Mulberry trees with beautifully aged trunks that drip with fruit every year … I love birds and have pairs of white doves all over the place and even some real-live ones that live in an old stable outside and fly freely around the house – we also have a very old pony who comes running to be fed whenever I’m outside and sing the chorus to ‘Heart of Glass’.  We also love lighting candles at night for their glow and aroma and I think all of this helps to ‘zenify’ the home.

What is your favourite imperfection about yourself and why?

My favourite imperfection about myself is the scars on my face from the accident – no-one else can really see them anymore, but they are part of my journey and made me what I am today. I am grateful for the empathy and understanding I now have for others, that the early lesson of going through such a trauma has taught me.

_MG_6394

What is one question that everyone should ask themselves?

I think everyone should ask themselves ‘what can I do today that will make this a better place tomorrow’ – whether that be to use less plastic, create a garden, forgive a wrongdoing or just have some time out and play with a child … every little positive thing can make a difference.

What is the most important decision you make to ensure you are a conscious consumer?

The most conscious decisions I try to make as a consumer involve using less plastic – taking re-usable bags to the shops, only buying products packaged in pure glass, re-cycling where possible, putting leftovers in Pyrex bowls with lids instead of Tupperware or cling-wrap etc.

Pretend this is your mountain… what message do you shout to the world?

Stop and Think about what we are doing and what can we change to make this World a better place.

Thank you for walking onto this virtual stage! Now if you were walking onstage in real life what tune would you have playing as your theme song?

Thank you SO much for having me!!

Absolutely anything by Michael Jackson – dancing makes me feel so alive, and there is no music that makes me want to move more than his beats. He was, and still is, an amazing inspiration to millions.

What motivated you to take the first step on your wellness journey?

I am blessed to have incredible parents who have taught me so much about life since I was a child. They’re both so motivated with lots of interests, and love to do what they love – my mum is a make-up artist and an astrologer, while my dad is tradie and plays the bongos in a folk band. He even has certificates in reiki and reflexology. Since a teenager, my nickname has been “LG: Life’s Good”, which I adopted as my motto and always lived by it, so the journey has always been there for me in some form. There have been some major lessons throughout my life as we’ve all had, but the real turning point was exactly on year ago, where I just had a click – I saw how negative my thoughts were and I decided to look at things differently. I was then able to see that I had literally been creating the life that I always wanted, yet I just kept looking for more “things” to make me happy, not even seeing that I already had everything I needed. That perspective changed everything… I began to fall completely in love with me.

What do you do every morning to set up your day for success?

I will always take those first few minutes as soon as I wake up to check in with myself and see how I’m feeling. It takes me a while to get ready for work, so I always give myself enough time to do it slowly, which allows me to listen to talks by some of my favourite authors. This is a habit I adopted from my mother – I grew up listening to the mumble of talks from her bathroom, and still do hear it when I’m home!

There are so many nutritional untruths floating around out there. What is your favourite myth to debunk?

I love debunking the idea that you need dairy! Oh I get such a kick out of seeing peoples faces when they realize how brainwashed they had been for so many years. It’s like they just walked into a twilight zone.

How do you handle your dietary non-negotiables when you are invited over or out for dinner?

I’m not strict on myself. I’m lucky to not have any dietary intolerance’s  so for me, I believe anything is fine in moderation. I’m constantly crowding myself with beautiful, nutritious food that I hardly leave any room for the “bad stuff”, but I don’t really look at much as non-negotiable (except for meat on the most-part). I still allow myself to eat whatever I want. This is why I don’t use labels – I don’t call myself a vegetarian or vegan. When people ask, I just say that I don’t eat meat. That is what made the transition unbelievably easy. I didn’t attach any pressure of rules, I just made a simple decision to try replace something with something else, and it all snowballed from there – I haven’t eaten meat in almost a year now, and it has been effortless.

If I knew the meat came from a humane source, then maybe I would try that meal, however, I still haven’t done this because I’ve never really felt the want to, as there’s always a delicious alternative. I’m also big in leading by example and showing how easy my choices are. When I first cut out meat, my friends would make a big deal out of choosing a restaurant that caters for me, when that’s the last thing I’ve ever wanted. If I had to, I’m more than happy to just casually pluck the meat out of the meal and enjoy the rest of it, or load up on the side dishes.

So because of this, my transition has been nothing but exciting and enjoyable. I never feel restricted; I just adore showering my deserving body with love!

If you had to cook one meal to impress a tough crowd of unhealthy eaters, what would it be?

I once whipped up a delicious thick shake with avocado, spinach, almond milk, raw cocao, maca and some berries and banana for 10 friends. I didn’t tell anyone what was in it until they had all tried (and loved!) it. I asked them all to guess what I had thickened it with and no one came close. When they heard it was avocado they nearly fell off their chairs – a combination they had never heard of. I find that so much fun!

2lynn

Do you have any natural products/alternative therapies that you cannot live without?

Osteopathic treatments are a must for me – especially after a long flight. I can really feel the relief and the free-flow of energy after getting adjusted back into alignment.

How do you ‘zen-ify’ your home?

My home is usually a hotel room, so I like to pay extra attention to adding the zen!

always pack an all-natural, soy wax candle, and I have a small Himalayan rock salt candle as well, which emits negative ions to help freshen the air and counteract all the wifi and devices (my boyfriend and I are Apple addicts).

I also carry an aromatherapy spray to spritz around the room. At the moment I have a blend for purification – but I only know that because the bottle says it! Next on my list is to learn more about aromatherapy.

As soon as I check-in to a hotel, I will instantly unpack my suitcase and hang my clothes (I travel with my own light hangers, as there’s never enough – this helps with the uncluttering). It only takes about 15 minutes, and if you don’t do it as soon as you arrive, then you never will, and will end up spending a week living out of the explosion of clothes on the floor on top of your case – and there’s nothing zen about that!

What is your favourite imperfection about yourself and why?

I can get cranky as all-hell sometimes, and it serves as the perfect contrast to remind me what I choose not to be.  Of course I still allow it, as the crankiness is there for a reason and I need to discharge the emotion, but then I get another reminder about how much I’ve changed. It’s no longer about the person or event that is pissing me off. Instead, I check in with myself to ask, “what is this reflection showing me”? It’s all about my own stuff, it has nothing to do with what is happening, and that’s such an easier way to handle any situation. It’s a fun place to be rather than carrying around blame and judgment all the time.

What is one question that everyone should ask themselves?

How do I feel?”

I ask myself this constantly. From the moment I wake up, to when I go to bed. It’s so easy to forget about yourself completely and be too externally focused. Now, I’m always checking in with myself and it feels just as good as hearing “I love you” from the person you love, because that’s exactly what you’re doing to yourself. Giving that little girl inside (as my mum puts it) the attention that she deserves, then removes your need to seek it outside of you, which will never be as fulfilling anyway. Quit the wild goose chase – you’ve got everything you need inside there!

What is the most important decision you make to ensure you are a conscious consumer?

I stopped eating meat last year as my vote against factory farming of animals. It’s a disgrace, and one of the worst kept secrets in this world.

Pretend this is your mountain… what message do you shout to the world?

LIFE’S GOOD!!!!

Goodness gracious – wasn’t that girl inspiring!!! What was your favorite part of the interview? I’d love to hear from you in the comments…

alisonL-0852

Thank you for walking onto this virtual stage! Now if you were walking onstage in real life what tune would you have playing as your theme song?

Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke.  I love a good beat to walk to.

What motivated you to take the first step on your wellness journey?

My business, Relauncher, wasn’t initially so health & wellness focused ~ it was through the journey of creating the business that I found my true passions.

I love feeling healthy and totally aware of how my body is feeling.  The results of living consciously is so rewarding on many levels.

What do you do every morning to set up your day for success?

1I’m getting up earlier and earlier to fit my day in.  I try to wait until 5 most mornings (although I struggle with this sometimes and end up getting up!).

I start off with meditation, then get as much work done before the family rises and the chaotic morning kicks off until school time.

How do you handle your dietary non-negotiables when you are invited over or out for dinner?

It depends on the situation.  If we are out for dinner, it’s not too hard to choose the best option on the menu.

When out at friends places, I just go with the flow and eat what I’m served ~ although most of the time I won’t do dessert.  I was such a chocolate girl in the past that if I get the taste for it too often, I’m sure I’d be craving it again pretty quickly!

If you had to cook one meal to impress a tough crowd of unhealthy eaters, what would it be?

It would have to be FULL of flavour, so they can see how tasty eating healthy could be.

Entrée Kale Chips, Buckwheat Crisp Bread, Hummus and crisp veggie sticks

Main Wild salmon seasoned with lemon & herbs, served with one of my famous salads with roasted vegetables, hemp seeds & nuts, topped with a tasty dressing served.

Dessert  Raw jaffa tart and a side serving of bliss balls.  Oh, and homemade fragrant chai tea.

Picture1

Do you have any natural products/alternative therapies that you cannot live without?

These day’s I only use natural products.  Once you’ve been using them, you realize how harsh the chemicals are.

My top 3 natural products I couldn’t live without are these soap nuts,  this natural dishwashing detergent , and this lemon myrtle toothpaste which tastes amazing   (there are so many more… I could keep going!)

How do you ‘zen-ify’ your home?

Opening the curtains and letting in fresh air – even on a cold day I need fresh air through the house!

I have lots of plants – in fact I need to get some more indoor plants.

alison-1028

What is your favourite imperfection about yourself and why?

Getting up early.  It’s a double-edged sword.  If only I could sleep in on the weekends….

What is one question that everyone should ask themselves?

How healthy do I feel?  And really ponder on it, answering truthfully to yourself. Most people have no idea how good their bodies are designed to feel!

Pretend this is your mountain… what message do you shout to the world?

Create a life you love, and be grateful every step of the way.

Wellness Women We Love: Therese Kerr – KORA Organics

Therese EH ambassador

When you hear the words ‘Kerr’ and ‘KORA’ together your mind probably jumps straight to images of radiant health, organic living and (in the words of Zoolander) really, really ridiculously good-looking people. And whether you are talking about the face and Owner of KORA – Supermodel Miranda Kerr – or her mother and Former General Manager of the company, Therese, you would be correct.

Therese was given a life-or-death ultimatum that forced her to evaluate the everyday decisions in her life and change path to a life focused on nutrition and wellness. Therese now lives a spiritual existence that is deeply rooted in positive psychology, organic produce and connection with nature. Her enthusiasm for spreading the good word is contagious and inspiring and I am sure her upcoming literary debut will be testament to that. Her website www.theresekerr.com is a daily dose of clean-living for the body, mind and soul.

I am beyond delighted to present the utterly gorgeous Therese Kerr…

Thank you for walking onto this virtual stage! Now if you were walking onstage in real life what tune would you have playing as your theme song?

Hmmm…. Brendan James:  “All I can see”. I love this song, it starts with: “I want to walk through this doorway, I want to open my mind, I want to pledge my allegiance to all I can find, I want a car that will crash through the barriers to a road no-one knows, I want to feel less controlled, want to bend and I want to land far from home………”

It goes on to say: …… “So if I cannot learn to journey and return, to never rest til I see all I can see…..

I want to learn a completely new language, one I don’t understand,  I want to help someone lost, someone helpless, with the strength of my hand (that’s my favourite bit) …. And feel their hope in my tears

What motivated you to take the first step on your wellness journey?

The turning point in my life was when I lost my spleen due to tumours. I always thought I was healthy but I never truly understood the impact of applying chemical-laden products to my skin or eating non-certified or market-fresh produce. I also never truly understood the impact of stress or suppressed emotions on the human body – I now do. Having tumours in my spleen inspired me to truly look at my  life in every aspect, to question my life in the fullest detail, to look at why I behaved in the manner I did (pain in the neck over-rated achiever) and to transform so many areas of my life. Things happen to us in our past and I share a lot of my story in my new soon-to-be-released book “Live, loving you – living from the heart”.

The challenge is that we make those things “mean” something about us. As human beings, we are “meaning making machines” and unfortunately we live into the story we create and our story becomes our reality and most of the time the “story” is so just that “a story”.  My mum died when I was 17 and pregnant with Miranda. When mum died I created a “story” that firstly because I fell pregnant in the first place I was an embarrassment to her and secondly that I would prove to her that I could be anything she had hoped I could be. Basically, when mum died all I wanted was to make her proud of me.  So for twenty odd years, I worked my backside off, always striving to be the best I could be with an attitude that I could do anything but I never understood, until I did a lot of work on myself, why I was so driven. You see, the story became my reality. The truth is mum died and she would have been proud of me anyway.

I have done so much work on myself over the past twelve to thirteen years.  I am not the same person I was and I will continue to evolve in every minute to hopefully always be a better version of me.  I have true power in my life over my past, I have a calm and a peace within me that I never thought was possible, even when difficult things happen, I am still at peace and know that it is all part of the bigger picture of my life and whatever happens, happens because there is a lesson to be learned and an opportunity for growth on a persona level.

I am blessed to live a life I love, because I choose to live a life I love and create my “being” every day.  After all, we are human beings, not human doings and by choosing our “being” we get to say how life goes moment by moment and that is such a blessing.

Further, health happens by choice, not by accident. We cannot live in today’s society and expect health to fall in our lap, that won’t happen. With the highly refined, highly processed, high sugar-content foods that most people fill their body with, and that coupled with the amount of chemicals, preservatives, colourings, etc that traditional food and personal care products contain, our bodies are basically working over time just to survive, let alone prosper. Just about everyone’s liver is so taxed at trying to rid their body of toxins that it can’t perform vital roles like breaking down fat and chemicals, toxins etc in our body effect all of our organs and every part of us.

Personally, I want to be around for a long time, but I only want to be around for a long time if I am healthy and enjoying life. I am 48, my mum died of a heart attack as a result of over work, stress and possibly genetics at the age of 50. I want to be around and be vibrant, lit up and alive by life. I have been told that our cells have the ability to live to an average age of 122, yet how many people live anywhere near that?

Simply “choosing health” even when you have a super active, busy life is the answer. I am committed to my health (mind, body and spirit) and I am further committed to continually gaining and then sharing knowledge – the purpose of my website is to do just that – share information such that people can take from the information, anything that serves, leave behind what doesn’t and in the process, hopefully, leave with the ability to at least make informed choices for their own personal health and the health of their family.  I intend to be a vibrant, spontaneous great great grandmother.

What do you do every morning to set up your day for success?

Give my husband a kiss, and my dog a cuddle

Meditate for anywhere between 20- 50 mins depending on my day

Post my instagram affirmation or positive post to the world.

Make a “Juic-thie” (a combination between a juice and a smoothie – my own made up name – recipe is on www.theresekerr.com)

There are so many nutritional untruths floating around out there. What is your favourite myth to debunk?

That’s easy:  “There is no difference between certified organic fruit, vegetables, foods and products compared to general products” – crazy!!! There is a huge difference and the only way to know is to change over and discover this for yourself.

It is said that the average woman applies between 200-500 chemicals a day to her skin and we wonder why we have hormone and health problems. What we put on our skin, soaks in so don’t put on your skin what you would not put in your body – consume only certified organic food and apply only certified organic products to your body, it is really that simple.  Take a look at Dr Libby Weaver’s posts on my website for the impact of chemicals in skin and personal care products on the reproductive organs.

How do you handle your dietary non-negotiables when you are invited over or out for dinner?

Like Miranda, I believe in the 80/20 rule but in saying that anyone who invites me to dinner knows me well enough, (or I make sure they do) to know that I prefer to eat only certified organic foods when possible.

If you had to cook one meal to impress a tough crowd of unhealthy eaters, what would it be?

Well, most unhealthy eaters love sugar and sugar is so addictive – the more you have, the more your body craves so the sooner you can get away from sugar, the better.  I would make “Jen’s scrumptious Pear Cake” (from my co-authored book: Lunchbox Solutions which can be found here – that is the full interactive I-pad version, there are other version, I.e. A light interactive version without the videos or there is a pdf version that can be opened on a computer if you don’t have an iPad. It is  interesting to note that some of our chapters are #1 downloaded worldwide on iTunes in various categories which is very exciting and we have been receiving constant wonderful testimonials from people using and loving our book – so simple and so user friendly).

Do you have any natural products/alternative therapies that you cannot live without?

Plenty….

1)             Coconut Oil – it is a MCA (medium chain fatty acid and converts to energy in the body as opposed to converting to fat, reportedly assists with prevention of Alzheimer’s, boost the metabolism, is great for purging – I.e. Removing toxins from the mouth, is the only safe oil to use when cooking as it has a high heat tolerance… and the list goes on)

2)            KORA Organics Certified Organic skincare – it is amazing and as the ex General Manager of KORA Organics I saw so many great testimonials with our products. KORA is only skincare, but I am bringing out my own range of Certified Organic Haircare and personal care products soon. The product range will consist of the following:

  • Shampoo, Conditioner and Certified Organic Argan Oil Blend
  • Deodorant
  • Tooth Mousse
  • Moisturising Hand Soap
  • Moisturising Hand Lotion
  • Sanitising Hand Gel (Hand Sanitiser)

How do you ‘zen-ify’ your home?

Every morning I “play” my Tibetan singing bowl and carry the intent for the new day from my mediation and create the energy for my home.

I light incense on the odd occasion and sometimes burn sage to clear any energy.  I have my blinds up so as to let natural light in and I play music a lot of the time. I personally very rarely watch TV so that energy is not in the house at all until sometimes in the evening when my husband comes home from work and watches the same.

What is your favourite imperfection about yourself and why?

I have several keyhole scars on my belly where I had to have my spleen removed. These scars remind me of the journey I have undergone from having first had tumours to now. Having had tumours in my spleen was a blessing to my life. I would not be who I am but for that experience and I would not have made health my life if that had not happened. I am so fit and healthy now, I honestly feel like I am 20 years young! I recently did an Ayurvedic Retreat at Sukhavati Retreat and Spa in Bali (one of the most amazing experiences of my life – the treatments were world class and the Balinese people have a grace, in my opinion, that is unmatched by any other culture) and the Ayurvedic Doctor could not believe that my Dosha’s were perfectly in balance and my pulse was perfect – so I must be doing something right.  Stay tuned as I am bringing out health and wellness programs to share everything I do in relation to wellness with the world.

What is one question that everyone should ask themselves?

What is my health worth to me?

You see, I believe everyone and I mean everyone should use certified organic products on their skin and use certified organic personal care products and should also eat certified organic food.  I also believe people eat far too much and we recommend buying your certified organic produce from a farmers market and eating less  don’t eat until you are over full, that is a mistake we make, eat until you feel just comfortable (note: all of the farmers markets in Australia are shown on my website under “Wellness Directory” http://theresekerr.com/market-directory/ )

If you swap to certified organic I believe you will reap the rewards and your body will thank you, I see it every day

What is the most important decision you make to ensure you are a conscious consumer?

Buying certified organic. Certified Organic not only benefits you, it also benefits the planet. I buy certified organic for two reasons:

  1. healthier for my body
  2. Certified Organic products including skincare and personal care products, fruit, vege’s etc are free from pesticides, insecticides, TEA’s, DEA’s, Glycols, Parabens, Synthetic and Artificial ingredients, Sulfates, Ethoxylates, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde derivatives – just to name a few/

Don’t be fooled into thinking “Organic” is the same as “Certified Organic” – there is a huge misrepresentation around the world in relation to the use of the word “Organic”. Only Certified Organic products are the ones that don’t contain all of the nasties. Certified Organic has to contain the wording” “Certified Organic” and have to have the name of the certifying body somewhere on the packaging plus in most cases the logo of the certifying body.  Do your research and know that companies can say a product “Contains” Certified Organic ingredients or can say: “Containing Certified Organic Ingredients” but the product, because it is not certified will more likely than not still contain chemicals – the only real exception being if the company hasn’t been able to afford to certify their products, but if that happens, who is the governing body ensuring what the company is saying is correct? There is a big difference between “Organic” and Certified Organic and we only recommend “Certified Organic”, not just “Organic” and/or “Natural ingredients”.

Pretend this is your mountain… what message do you shout to the world?

Let your little light shine. Stop trying to be everything you think other people want you to be and just be the magic of you.  You are a unique and incredible gift to the world, go out and be just that. Let go of limiting beliefs (they aren’t real anyway) and go make a difference to the world.

The world is simply abounding with amazing, wonderful women that are doing so much good! So from now on every Wednesday** I will be interviewing an amazing woman that is sending some serious good juju into our world… because goddamn they should be celebrated!

For anyone who has read this blog for a while you would be aware that there is one woman in particular who inspires my life…

Jessica Ainscough. The Wellness Warrior. Blogger. Health Coach Extraordinaire. Public Speaker. Author. #girlcrush.

She is a bonafide superstar in the health and wellness world and is doing a damn fine job at spreading the message that our bodies can heal themselves. Jess kicked cancers ass via natural therapies, positive psychology and basically just simplifying her life (less stress, getting back to nature).

She also changes my life on a daily basis through her Lifestyle Transformation Guide. I am part of her tribe and while I continue to work through her program I am constantly bolstered by encouraging emails from her, answers to my silly questions and an awesome community to boot. She gave me to tools to get myself healthy. She inspired me to take the step that found me on this path… going in a direction I am finally happy with.

Basically I am unbelievably honoured to have Jessica Ainscough as my inaugural Wellness Women We Love.

Bucket list item… tick.

Thank you for walking onto this virtual stage! Now if you were walking on-stage in real life what tune would you have playing as your theme song?

Dark Fantasy by Kanye West.

What motivated you to take the first step on your wellness journey?

A double kick up the butt from the universe! I was leading a lifestyle that was a tonne of fun, but not good for me in any way. I was working long hours, eating food that came from a microwave, and drinking like a fish four nights a week. When I was 22, my body gave me a huge ultimatum in the form of a terminal cancer diagnosis. With no conventional treatment options available, I had to radically change my lifestyle and commit 100% to healing myself.

What do you do every morning to set up your day for success?

I start my day with a walk up Mt Coolum or a walk by the beach, followed by oil pulling, dry body brushing, and meditation. I finish up my meditation with this mantra: ‘Always speak your truth, always follow your intuitive, always act with love and kindness.’ Then I pick an Angel card to find out what my angels want me to know for the day.

There are so many nutritional untruths floating around out there. What is your favourite myth to debunk?

That being healthy is boring and bland. It’s the most fun thing ever!! Those of us over here on the clean side feel like we’ve been let in on a big secret. I love seeing people’s faces when they taste the food that I eat on a daily basis. Most of the world has no idea about raw desserts, natural sweeteners, the fact that you can make milk and cheese from nuts, and that green smoothies taste incredible.

How do you handle your dietary non-negotiables when you are invited over/out for dinner?

Unless I’m going somewhere that will serve me organic food, I take my own. I pack an esky full of yummy home-made food so that I don’t feel deprived while I watch others eat. I even went to a Thai restaurant recently and took my own coconut curry. I just always call ahead first to make sure it’s okay.

If you had to cook one meal to impress a tough crowd of unhealthy eaters, what would it be?

I would probably make healthy Mexican – spiced beans, guacamole, cashew sour cream, homemade chilli sauce, lots of fresh salads and potatoes cooked in coconut oil and spices. Then for dessert, it would either be raw chocolate brownies or a raw avocado-lime cheesecake.

Do you have any natural products/alternative therapies that you cannot live without?

Coconut oil! I use it for everything – cooking, moisturising, hair mask, make-up remover, sunscreen …

How do you ‘zen-ify’ your home?

First, I make sure my home is always flooded with natural light and air. I have doors and windows open all day. I also have house plants displayed around the place to add to my air quality. I have so many Himalayan salt lamps in my home that the place glows orange at night. These guys neutralise positive ions by emitting negative ones, to create a healthier space (particularly good around electrical items). Plus, I have an oil diffuser going most of the day spitting out beautiful essential oils in scents like peppermint or lavender.

What is your favourite imperfection about yourself and why?

I’m very loud. People are always telling me to use my indoor voice, but I don’t have one. I’m not sure why I like this. It used to be embarrassing, but now I just think it’s funny.

What is one question that everyone should ask themselves?

Am I experiencing joy on a regular basis?

What is the most important decision you make to ensure you are a conscious consumer?

Always buy, eat, apply and clean with 100% natural and certified organic foods and products.

Pretend this is your mountain… what message do you shout to the world?

Be kind to yourself. Do what makes you happy. Eat real food. Drink green juice.
